'Los Alumnos de la Araucania'- Serving the underserved in a rural Chilean high school

Chile is one of the more stable and prosperous nations in Latin America, and has thriving agriculture, forestry, and industry. However, not all regions within Chile are equally prosperous, or have equal access to educational opportunities for their young people.

My good friend and fellow forestry professional, Marcelo Jara Sanhueza, has been teaching for seven years in Gorbea, a rural community in south-central Chile. This region is home to a large proportion of Chile's remaining indigenous peoples and temperate rainforest. By teaching at the school (instead of pursuing a more lucrative career in Chile's forest industry), Marcelo is working to address issues related to both social justice and the environment.

Marcelo (leftmost individual) and students from Liceo de Gorbea (Gorbea high school), on a field trip sponsored by the University of Washington Forest Club in 2004.

Under current funding, Marcelo is struggling to provide his students with educational materials (books, field tools, etc.) and opportunities (primarily field trips to study environmental issues). Those of us who have had an education in natural resource management know how critical these things are to learn the trade of caring for our environment and its productive capacity.

If you would like to help with a contribution of any amount, please contact Mark Swanson (markswan@u.washington.edu, cell: 206-947-5323). I can personally vouch for the transparency and end-use of all contributed funds. THANK YOU!
